Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling, especially ground fighting, with the goal of gaining a dominant position and using joint locks and choke holds to force an opponent to submit. It promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person using leverage and proper technique can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can be trained for self-defense, sport grappling tournaments and mixed martial arts competition. Sparring, commonly referred to as “rolling” and live drill play a major role in training, and a premium is placed on performance, especially in competition (although no one is required to compete). Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu – Technique This class is recommended for everyone who is first starting in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. These classes focus on the details and fundamentals of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The fundamentals are a necessity for anyone looking to compete or fight in mixed martial arts. Before you start participating in the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu – Sparring classes, be sure you have done enough technique classes to feel comfortable with all of the terms and positions in Jiu-Jitsu. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu – Sparring The live rolling class is to help simulate the length and intensity of a competition. No group techniques are shown. Practices consist of 6-minute timed matches held back-to-back for the entire class time.

Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques, from a mixture of martial arts traditions. The rules allow the use of striking and grappling techniques, both while standing and on the ground. Modern mixed martial arts competition emerged in popular culture in 1993 with the founding of the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship). Initially based on finding the most effective martial arts for real unarmed combat situations, competitors of various arts were pitted against one another with minimal rules or concern for safety. In the following decade, MMA promoters adopted many additional rules aimed at increasing safety for competitors and to promote mainstream acceptance of the sport. Following these changes, the sport has seen increased popularity with pay per view reach rivaling boxing and professional wrestling. St. Charles MMA & Vaghi Martial Arts is made up of both amateur and professional fighters who work hard and have an extremely high winning percentage. The combination of our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu,wrestling, Muay Thai and Boxing programs with a highly effective conditioning program make us the best choice for mixed martial arts training anywhere in the midwest.
